Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Presence

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
