The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
