New research indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
